BUILDING A NEW LANGUAGE FOR FASHION AND IDENTITY.

Matthew Attard Navarro
Founder & Creative Direction of ANCC

Malta made him. London shaped him. In the middle stands ANCC, Matthew Attard Navarro’s creative studio built on clarity, identity, and control. We talk about growing a business without losing its soul, creating space for slower thinking in a fast world, and why real creativity starts when the noise cuts out.

From Malta to London — How has your journey influenced your creative approach?
Both places have a distinct visual language. London is where I live and work, but Malta will always be a personal and creative anchor, it always grounds me, and the older I get the more I find myself returning to elements that have stayed with me. My recent work on URNA for the Maltese Pavilion at the London Design Biennale brought that connection full circle, blending design with cultural resonance.

ANCC has grown fast — What’s been the biggest shift since launching?
When I founded ANCC in 2018, social media wasn’t as fast as it is today. We’ve grown by evolving with it, expanding into high-impact social content while staying grounded in creative direction.

ANCC takes a holistic approach to projects. How do you ensure brand cohesion across disciplines?
We start by defining a brand’s personality with clarity, mood, tone, energy. Everything we create, from visuals to voice, flows from that. The identity can flex and evolve, but the core remains consistent.

You’ve worked with global brands - does your mindset shift?
With global brands, it’s about scale, and we fit in usually in a small way in a mix of agencies. What we try to do is find ways we keep true to ourselves in the most honest way.

You recently released John, what’s the concept behind it?
John is a limited-edition zine with photographer Steve Harnacke. It explores youth, identity and personal growth, who we are now, and who we hope to become. It’s the first in a series of photographer books we’re developing, and we started with Steve as a frequent collaborator.

What’s exciting you in fashion and branding right now?
The way social media has democratised visibility. New voices and aesthetics are emerging fast, and everyone has the space to define their own narrative.

“ We start by defining a brand’s personality with clarity, mood, tone, energy. Everything we create, from visuals to voice, flows from that.

The identity can flex and evolve, but the core remains consistent "

A moment that reminded you why you do this?
The John project. It brought us back to a space where design, direction, and curation intersect. That’s the core of what we love.

If you weren’t doing this, what would you be doing?
Photography.

What’s next for you and ANCC?
We’re working on a new collaborative project launching soon. It’s about creating a platform that brings multiple teams together in a more editorial manner.

Finally... Where is your SOMEWHERE GOOD?
For me, it’s not a location. It’s a moment. A clean mental slate. An empty inbox and a clean downloads folder!
